me at a party: they don’t know I want to explain why “stranger danger” was a reagan propaganda campaign to promote nuclear family “values” and increase police power, which then lead to mass incarceration. they don’t know kidnappings in the 80s were purposefully sensationalized in the media and that the claimed statistics were exaggerated. they don’t know most children are abused or kidnapped by someone they know, especially a parent, and that isolation of families prevents children from seeking help and support within their communities not available at home.

To say it simply, it’s that you’ve grown up, you’ve lived your life or you’ve lived your childhood—it’s over. Time has passed, and you can’t take back the choices you made, and now you have to live with them.

If there was a way to run SUPER MEGA AD BLOCKER on this website I fucking would

“Please oh please open up your computer to a porn virus! If you don’t you’re evil!”

Freeloader Comin’ through!

We didn’t start this war internet users have with ads - We might have moaned about banner ads, but it was only when they started making noises when we might be listening to music or a podcast or whatever, causing two sound sorces at once, that we started trying to block ads universally rather than just a specific type of ad (pop ups).

And since then ads have gotten worse - Actual malware rather than merely breaking one of the fundamental sins of web design - though shalt not autoplay anything with sound. And the more aggressive a website is with ‘please turn off adblock’ the less I trust it to bother to vet ads and advertisers to make sure they’re not installing malware.

Not to mention that the idea that avoiding ads is “freeloading” is hilariously backward. Advertisement is a transaction between the platform and the advertiser, the user has no obligation to provide the views/clicks the platform has promised. Using an adblocker isn’t freeloading in the same way that leaving the room to get a snack during a commercial break isn’t cheating the tv network.

Ok y’all, I work as a web developer and I’m here to tell you that you are 100% right and that it’s shit. SO I’m going to tell you how to get around websites that block you from using their website if you’re using an adblocker.

Every website uses a language called JavaScript; long story short it’s a website language that allows developers to do the crazy shit you see on websites. Now the easiest thing to do is to disable JavaScript to stop them from knowing you have an adblocker:

image

Oh no! I’m blocked from viewing the website. It would be a terrible shame if I were able to right click and select the “inspect” feature

image

Click the three dots in the top right and open the “Settings” Menu

image

And then scrolled down to “Debugger” and checked the “Disable Javascript Option”

image

And then just refreshed the page

something else i’ve been thinking about lately is how much more alive houses are to people who experience domestic abuse. some things in the house are protectors - the door to your room that swings shut behind you without you pushing it, the stairs that always creak loud enough to let you know that someone’s coming before they get there… whereas other things are alive with malice - the cabinets that slam and the dishes that break, the vacuum cleaner that always manages to sound angry and accusing. the whole house listens, and the whole house remembers, and everything takes sides.

anyway in the alternate universe where i’m a children’s book author i’m writing a story about a child who lives in a house that protects them, whose floors swallow up the sound of their footsteps and whose doors lock without prompting, putting space between them and anyone who wishes them harm. the curtains open their arms when they need a place to hide, and no one can find them when they don’t want to be found, because the house won’t let it happen.

I think what people need to remember is that ridiculous situations happen to people every single day. You’ve probably experienced a few. The next step however, is telling the story, and not everyone is a good storyteller. That’s where people start to doubt a story, when it’s told well.

Comedians make a living off of retelling everyday events. I’m sure every one of us has a friend or an uncle or a teacher who’s done something as normal as put a bunch of quarters into a jukebox to annoy restaurant patrons. That’s not actually a crazy tale. But John Mulaney is famous for it, because he’s a good story teller.

Plenty of people read autobiographies and feel connected to the author because they’ve lived such similar lives. But of all those people, only one person actually wrote the life story and published it, because they’re a story telller. That’s what they do. It’s a talent and a skill.

Whenever people call one of my posts fake, I just wanna tell them to hone in on the main story. Without the added jokes. What REALLY happened? Probably nothing that wild. Then it’s suddenly believable.

That’s my metric for spotting fake stories. Did something happen that’s ACTUALLY unbelievable? Did people in the story behave in a way that nobody behaves? Or was it mostly pretty normally and the person just told it in a way that’s entertaining?

And even THEN, sometimes weird stuff just happens!!! The world is so big and so full of people and some of them are unhinged and the rest of us witness that!
